This article highlights the remarkable accomplishments made by the Animal Shelter Alliance of Portland (ASAP). Working together, coalition organizations have made dramatic improvements in save rates over the past six years.
Multnomah County Animal Services (MCAS) is one of the founding members of ASAP, a group comprised of ten major animal shelters and veterinary associations in the Portland metro area. Member organizations work together to meet goals and overcome obstacles. ASAP recognizes the differing roles played by coalition members and therefore, statistics for all shelters are combined. The purpose of combining statistical information is to determine how the community is doing, on the whole, for Portland's pets. This approach recognizes that pet overpopulation and its consequences are a community issue and the responsibility for improving save rates is shared by the entire community.
